The landscape along the Weinviertel Way of St James is varied. Vineyards, forests, dry meadows, the Wagram ridge, the vast expanse of the Tullnerfeld and the Wachau region await you.
The Weinviertel Way of St James runs from Drasenhofen in the northern Weinviertel to Krems in the Wachau. Over a distance of 153 km, you’ll walk through a variety of landscapes that will enchant all your senses.
Amidst vineyards and vines
A good part of the Weinviertel Way of St James takes you through gently rolling vineyards; you’ll make your way along the route surrounded by vines and vineyards. During Wine Autumn, you can smell the scent of plump grapes and experience the Weinviertel in a very special way. In the Wagram landscape region too, stretching as far as the gateway to the Wachau and the Krems wine terrace, vineyards dominate the landscape.
Forests and the Leiser Berge Nature Park
The Weinviertel Way of St James also passes through forests, such as the Leiser Wald or the Rohrwald. In the Rohrwald, you’ll also find a marshy area. The Leiser Berge Nature Park, home to the Buschberg – the highest point in the Weinviertel – is characterised, by contrast, by steppe-like dry grasslands, which are a result of the freshwater limestone soil. The limestone is rich in clearly recognisable fossils – the fossilised shells or ammonites on boulders in the ploughed fields are often recognisable even to the untrained eye.
Michelberg and Waschberg
The hills of Michelberg and Waschberg also offer fascinating scenery. They are home to small patches of woodland, though the majority is covered by grass. This Waschberg zone is also known as the Weinviertel Cliffs; here, rare plant species such as orchids can be found, alongside a breathtaking diversity of wildlife.
