A more detailed description can be found in the book ‘Jakobswegweiser Weinviertel’, which is available from bookshops (ISBN 978-3707921588) or from Weinviertel Tourismus GmbH for €14.90. The ‘Jakobswegweiser’ is the ideal companion for an independent pilgrimage.

The Weinviertel Way of St James is approximately 153 km long, stretching from Drasenhofen to Krems on the Danube. It follows paths through fields and woods, passes through villages in the Weinviertel region and offers views of the countryside. With the right footwear, the route is easy to walk. 

Under ‘Places to Stop for Refreshments & Overnight Accommodation’, you will find a list of all catering establishments along the Way of St James, including their opening hours. A downloadable list of the inns along the route is available under ‘Downloads’. The route passes through an area that is not yet fully developed for tourism. Please ensure you carry sufficient drinking water and snacks with you on your journey and stock up at the respective starting point for each day’s stage. Sections of the route through the forest should not be tackled in the late afternoon or evening, as it can be difficult to complete the remaining distance when tired. Mobile phone reception is not reliable in some wooded areas along the route.

In the Weinviertel, there are private accommodation providers and hotels along the Way of St James where you can rest after a day on your feet. You can find all accommodation options, including a downloadable list of all accommodation providers, under “Stops & Accommodation”.

In both spring and autumn, you can experience the changing of the seasons. It’s not as hot for walking as it is during the summer months.

The forests in the Weinviertel are managed, which means that forestry work and the machinery required for it may result in rutted paths. We ask for your understanding in this matter.
The proportion of tarmac sections is higher in the western section from Stockerau to Krems, as the Weinviertel Way of St James runs alongside cycle routes. In the northern section, from Drasenhofen to Stockerau, there are few tarmac sections.
Overall, the elevation gain on the Weinviertel Way of St James is fairly modest, though there are a few ascents and descents to tackle. Walking poles may be helpful here.

The scallop shell has always been the symbol of the pilgrims to Santiago and is still regarded as a symbol along the Way of St James today.

In addition to the “Weinviertel Way of St James Guide”, you can purchase the Weinviertel Pilgrim’s Pass for €2.50 each from Weinviertel Tourismus GmbH.

There is a prayer book at every church along the route. You will also find the pilgrim’s stamp there. In Mikulov, please ask for the stamp at the tourist information centre on the main square. You can also get a pilgrim’s stamp at the citizens’ service centre in Mistelbach Town Hall and at the Buschberghütte.

Any pilgrim who has walked the Weinviertel Way of St James can obtain a pilgrim’s certificate online.

If you are planning to walk the entire route, it is not advisable to drive to the starting point at Drasenhofen in your own car, as the route ends in Krems an der Donau.

Travelling to Drasenhofen by public transport:

1. Option: From Vienna Floridsdorf, take the Schnellbahn to Laa/Thaya, then take the bus to Drasenhofen.
2. Option: From Vienna Floridsdorf, take the Schnellbahn to Mistelbach, then a taxi.

Travelling to Mikulov by public transport:

Good train connections from Vienna to Břeclav; change at Břeclav for the service towards Znojmo; alight at Mikulov na Moravě

There are a large number of multi-storey car parks and parking spaces in Krems an der Donau; however, if you wish to park for several days, you will have to pay a fee.

Along the route, there are connections to the rapid transit network in Mistelbach, Ladendorf, Stockerau, Hausleiten and Gaisruck. Alternatively, taxi companies in the region are available to assist you.
