This tour takes you through the gently rolling countryside, past ancient places of worship and picturesque vineyards. Numerous wine cellar lanes and cozy wine taverns line the route and invite you to linger in the beautiful Retzer Land.
The starting point of the “Chardonnay” Wine Cycle Route is the historic main square in Retz. Retz itself has been a wine capital for centuries. From here, you’ll cycle through gently rolling countryside, past magnificent vineyards, heading north toward Oberretzbach. Atthe “Heiligen Stein”—an ancient sacred site featuring one of Austria’s most beautiful cup-marked stones—you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Retz region, the Pulkau Valley, and southern Moravia. You’ll then cycle through picturesque countryside near the Czech border and reach the longest wine cellar lane in the Weinviertel near Hadres, featuring around 400 wine press houses and cellars. Here, you can also visit a showroom displaying old winemaking tools.
From there, you’ll head west “into” the particularly beautiful Pulkau Valley. The route takes you through Alberndorf and Haugsdorf to Jetzelsdorf. Numerous wine cellar lanes and cozy wine taverns line the route, inviting you to linger.
You’ll then cycle via Ragelsdorf back to Retz, the starting point of this tour. There’s still plenty to discover here: Be sure to explore the Retzer Erlebniskeller, which, by the way, is Austria’s largest historic wine cellar. The High Middle Ages-era old town is also well worth a visit. The town’s landmark—Austria’s only operational windmill —is also worth a visit and makes for a perfect conclusion to this tour.
Please note: Short-term parking is permitted within the city center. Please park outside the main square.
Retz is located on the Czech border and is easily accessible by car via state highways.
Retz is very easily accessible by train from Vienna.
There is also a train connection to Retz from Znaim.
