Description
The Nordwestbahn runs as a partly double-track electrified main line from Vienna through Lower Austria and the Czech Republic. The development of today's railroad line took place in several stages. From 1871, the existing Nordbahn line from Floridsdorf to Stockerau was extended on both sides. The turmoil of war and political circumstances in Czechoslovakia after 1945 led to the discontinuation of passenger services beyond Retz in 1952. In 1990, operations were resumed across the border to Znojmo.
A large part of the route from Vienna Northwest to Znojmo in the Czech Republic, which is just over 100 kilometers long, runs through the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria. Many beautiful excursion destinations - such as Bisamberg and Korneuburg, Stockerau and Hollabrunn as well as Retz - are therefore located directly on the Nordwestbahn.
