Wehrkirche St. Stephan

Church

Description

In 1055, Crubeten was donated to Passau Abbey by King Henry III, and with the founding of the double parish of Gaubitsch-Crubeten by Passau Abbey, Christianization was promoted in our region.

This double parish gave rise to 21 independent parishes in the Weinviertel.

The parish church is dedicated to St. Stephen and is structurally a patchwork of different eras, owners and feudal lords.

Initially there was probably a simple wooden church, which was replaced by a stone Romanesque church in the 12th century.

The tower, built as a defensive tower, dates back to around 1500. The belfry was added around 75 years later.
