Kellerviertel "Loamgrui" Unterstinkenbrunn
Cellar-lined roads
Description
The cellar village in Unterstinkenbrunn dates back to the heyday of winegrowing in the region, before the phylloxera plague at the beginning of the 20th century, and is unique in its kind. Rather than being a long wine cellar lane along a path or road, it is laid out around a central square and has its own alleyways, hollow paths and a multitude of small houses arranged like an archetypal village. It has a specially appointed mayor and is characterized by the lack of sheet metal and chimneys on the little houses. The name "Loamgrui" refers to both the place and the material in which the cellars are built, the hollow ways dug and with which the cellars are built. The interesting thing about the Unterstinkenbrunn situation is that every Unterstinkenbrunn house has a miniature counterpart, i.e. if there is a large house in the actual village, there is a small one in the cellar village.
The unmistakable charm of the Weinviertel wine cellar lanes can be experienced most impressively on a guided tour.
This provides fascinating insights into their history and the former significance of these special places.
