Hornmelde - Spuren aus der Eiszeit

Outdoor adventure

Description

The European hornwort, a plant that leaves traces of the Ice Age, thrives on gravelly and rocky mountain steppes as well as on dry loess slopes. In Austria, two sites of this rare plant are known, both located in the picturesque Weinviertel. They can be found in two loess hollows near Goggendorf, in the municipality of Sitzendorf an der Schmida, and on the steep slope of the Blauer Berg near Oberschoderlee, in the municipality of Stronsdorf. The site near Goggendorf was discovered as early as 1912 and has been offering insights into the botanical past ever since. A visit to these places not only offers the opportunity to admire this unique plant, but also to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Weinviertel.
