Description
Romantic cellar districts, a museum with bizarre inventions, mystical underground sites - this cycle tour combines a variety of worlds that are well worth exploring on this full-day tour.
- Equipment Please bring enough drinks with you; the inns and restaurants are not open daily and many Heurigen open only in the afternoon.
- Route description The cycling route "Welschriesling" starts in Poysdorf. In the "City of Wine" you can, for example, explore the Wine and Grape World or the Oldtimer Museum. From Poysdorf, you cycle through hilly landscape, past vineyards to Walterskirchen. When leaving the town, you cross a stream. The subsequent left turn leads you under the A5 motorway directly to Großkrut. Here a detour to the romantic cellar district at Kellerberg is worthwhile. Then you continue to the neighbouring town of Althöflein. Here at Kapellenberg you will find the largest contiguous earth cellar complex (these are medieval tunnels built below the surface) in Central Europe. From Althöflein you cycle on via Altlichtenwarth to Herrnbaumgarten, enjoying the typically hilly landscape of the Weinviertel. In Herrnbaumgarten, much worth seeing awaits you, such as a museum of bizarre inventions located right on the bike path, which we do not need, called the "Nonseum". You should also not miss the show vineyard with more than twenty grape varieties. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere at the wineries of the Schwalm, Bohrn or Parth families. Quite at the end of the town, where you meet the KTM bike path, turn right and leave the town. Past the Marian Grotto take the second left turn and follow the signs over the A5 motorway until you reach the B7 federal road. Along the B7 you now ride back towards Poysdorf, your starting point. Before reaching the town, turn left again into Badgasse and thus reach the town centre.Enjoy a delicious lunch at the Restaurant & Hotel Neustifter or a tasty Heurigen snack at the Veltlinerhof to finish. Before starting your journey home, you should definitely visit the Weinmarkt. Here you will find not only the delicious wines of the region but also other souvenirs and gifts.
- Parking The starting point of the route is located in the centre at the intersection Unterer Markt/Brünnerstraße. There is a short-term parking zone directly in the centre. You can park, for example, at the parking lot of the Weinmarkt (about 300m from the starting point)
- Getting there By car, Poysdorf is accessible via the "A5" motorway.
- Public transport Coming from Vienna, you must first take a bus or train to Mistelbach. From Mistelbach/Main Square there is a bus connection to Poysdorf. From Wolkersdorf there is also a bus connection to Poysdorf, but with a longer travel time.
- Editor’s tip By the way: Poysdorf is also the starting point of other cycling routes like the "Wine route with views"!
