Steinerne Bibel - Romanische Kirche

Church

Description

The cadastral parish of Schöngrabern is home to a sacred art monument that is unique in Europe. A Romanesque church was built here around 1230, which became world-famous for its richly decorated figures.

In the darkness of history

There is no written record of the church's origins. The builder, the circle of artists and the motivation for its construction are unknown.
Perhaps it was one of the powerful Kuenringers who erected a votive building here. The artists and their design were influenced by numerous cultural movements. The church was then forgotten by the public for a long time. Schöngrabern was only rediscovered in the 19th century and has since been the subject of many attempts at interpretation.

The stone Bible

On the outer wall of the apse, which is semi-circular in front of the chancel, a Bible in stone was created, a pictorial sermon that is unique in Europe with its rich plastic decoration. The apse is divided into three fields, each with a window and two sections.

The basic idea of the Stone Bible is the battle between good and evil.

In Romanesque simplicity and austerity, yet full of dynamism and sculptural beauty, these images tell of man's constant struggle against evil, his defeat and endurance and ultimately of the conquest of sin by Christ, who, as the second Adam, liberates and redeems mankind. The images warn the viewer, because the outcome of the battle always remains open, the decision lies with us - even today.

On the outside of the former side entrance, on the south side, there are two reliefs depicting the months of December and January.

On June 21, 1964, a modern Pieta (created by the young academic sculptor Franz A. Coufal) was erected by the steps.
