Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus

Church

Description

Baroque church of St. Nicholas

A princely donation from Empress Maria Theresa provided the necessary funds for the baroque building, which is one of the largest sacred buildings in the Weinviertel.

The builder was Father Leopold Sommerer, who was also the empress's confessor. The building plans were drawn up by a pupil of Fischer von Erlach and the building was completed after seven years of construction. The patron saint of the church is St. Nicholas, whose picture is placed above the high altar.

The picture on the high altar shows St. Theresa of Avila.

The right side altar, depicting St. Joseph, and the high altar itself come from the Carmelite convent in Wiener Neustadt.

The crucified figure on the left side altar stands protectively over a globe.

The organ, built by Johann Friedrich Ferstl in 1758, was destroyed during the French Wars (1809) and repaired in 1811 under Pastor Eduard Milde, later Archbishop of Vienna. By 1905, cracks were already appearing on the walls, which it was thought could be repaired with iron frames. Since 1908, the 120 steps, which were renovated in 1985, have led up to the church. The tower was not given the originally planned onion dome until 1953 by the Wolfpassing master tinsmith Karl Strobl. In the same year, the dome in the interior was restored by Professor Hermann Bauch. Extensive renovation work from the foundations to the roof truss was carried out in 2003. The ceremonial opening of the church with the consecration of the altar by Bishop Dr. Schwarz took place on September 14, 2003.
