Pfarrkirche Altlichtenwarth
Church
Description
The parish church is at the center of the community. It is a Romanesque fortified church, which is still surrounded by a defensive wall. The fresco cycle from around 1310 is particularly noteworthy in the interior. On December 4, 1994, the parish church of St. Nicholas was reconsecrated in a festive ceremony after three years of general renovation.
In the course of the renovation, an extensive archaeological excavation was carried out inside the church. This brought 44 graves with a total of 71 skeletons to light. Based on the combination of age at death and chronological classification of the burial objects, it was possible to identify two priests.
Seven naturally mummified individuals were recovered from the "tomb". After thorough anthropological examination, the mummies were returned to their final resting place at the site where they were found. According to the coffin remains, the dead can be assigned to the 18th century.
The archaeological finds are shown on a display board.
