Kirche Enzersfeld

Church

Description

Originally a chapel, the church "Maria Geburt" was built in 1681, with the chapel remaining as a presbytery (high altar room). In 1783, when Enzersfeld became its own parish, the church was extended. The first priest was Placidus Chimani (1783-1784), after whom a street in Enzersfeld is named. The vicarage and school were not built until 1787-1788 and remained in existence until 1905. On the occasion of the inauguration of the newly built vicarage on April 26, 1905, the prelate was asked to build a new church. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new church took place on July 4, 1908. It was built over the old church so that church services could be held during construction. The church, built in the Secession style, was consecrated on September 5, 1909. The baroque high altar of the old church is now the Marian altar. The altarpiece by the academic painter Schöffmann was based on the altarpiece in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on Rennweg in Vienna. On the east side is the Calvary group. The war memorial stands to the side of the main entrance.
