Kellergasse Untermarkersdorf

Cellar-lined roads

Description

The wine cellar lane of Untermarkersdorf - the "Köllatrift" - is a row of houses to the side of the village and, like many wine cellar lanes, resembles a village without a chimney and without a church tower. Today there are still 211 cellars and press houses in the Trift. Wine cellar lanes are primarily places where the grapes are pressed, the grape must ferments and the wine then matures. For the people of the Weinviertel, however, the wine cellar lanes have always been romantic places for socializing. The Untermarkersdorfer Kellertrift is one of the most remarkable in Austria. The Trift consists of the wine cellar lane and cellar quarters. The squares in the Kellertrift are known as the Kellerviertel.

The unmistakable charm of the Weinviertel wine cellar lanes can be experienced most impressively on a guided tour.
This provides fascinating insights into their history and the former significance of these special places.
