Kellergasse Straning

Cellar-lined roads

Description

The old wine cellar lane in Straning dates back to the 16th century. The people of Straning dug their cellars below the parish pasture, which belonged to Altenburg Abbey and the parish, after obtaining permission from the lordship. With the exception of the church cellar, the cellars did not yet have press houses. It was not until the 18th century that press houses were built along the Viehtrift, which gradually became a wine cellar lane.

Today, 65 press houses or cellars with "Vorkappeln" can still be admired in this wine cellar lane. With its large press houses up to three storeys high, the Straning wine cellar lane is unusual. Due to frequent fires in the village, the inhabitants of Straning simply built their cellars larger and stored their supplies in them: the actual press house is at ground level, the upper floor was used as a "Körndlkasten" (= grain store) and straw or hay was stored under the roof (= 3rd level).

The unmistakable charm of the Weinviertel wine cellar lanes can be experienced most impressively on a guided tour.
This provides fascinating insights into their history and the former significance of these special places.
