Bisongehege Großwetzdorf

Animal adventures

Description

The bison enclosure is located directly on the route of the Wetzdorf wine trail and covers an area of around 4 hectares. It is equipped with an artificial water source (well with drinking trough) and a natural one (pond). Hay and grain are fed. Red deer and many ground squirrels share the enclosure with the bison.

Bison are fascinating wild animals that cannot be compared with domesticated cattle breeds. As this species is one of the most endangered breeds, the conservation and care of the animals is very important to us.

In the meantime, one breeding bull and three mother cows provide for offspring every year. The bison bull weighs around 1000 kilograms. Bison are the largest land mammals in Europe and live to be around 30 years old.
