Stand up paddling, or SUP for short, is all the rage. The March-Thaya-Auen region in the Weinviertel offers ideal opportunities to explore a unique natural landscape in this way.
Stand-up paddling on the March and Thaya is a very special experience.
From June to October, you can explore the March-Thaya floodplains from the water in the north-eastern Weinviertel region, where the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria meet.
Natural landscape
The untouched March-Thaya floodplains are among the most fascinating floodplains in Central Europe and are an insider tip for nature and pleasure lovers.
March and Thaya
The March is a rather calm river that is ideal for enjoyable paddling and birdwatching, while the Thaya is somewhat more winding and unspoilt in its final section just before it joins the March. Stand up paddling involves standing on an oversized surfboard and using a paddle to move around.
This sport is easy to learn and professionals help, but it's more about experiencing nature and having fun.
Please note:
Due to renaturation work on the March (creation of natural river banks and the connection of oxbow lakes), all recreational traffic on the river will be severely restricted in the period from 01.06.2026 to 31.03.2027 (planned construction period) in the section below the bridge in Hohenau to the mouth of the Zaya (March-km 67.0 - 60.5). Navigating this area with canoes, kayaks, rafts, stand-up paddles, etc. is extremely dangerous during the construction period and therefore not possible!
