Description

A place that brings history to life: The Museum Retz is one of the oldest museums in Lower Austria and is housed in the historic Bürgerspital. Here, the exhibition takes visitors through the eventful past of the town and the region - from prehistoric times to more recent history. A particular rarity is the "Queen Europe", the oldest known depiction of the continent as a royal woman.

Currently, the special exhibition "RETZ 1945" is dedicated to the last months of the war, the end of the Nazi regime and the post-war period - with a focus on local and regional events. In the "South Moravian Gallery", works of art from neighboring South Moravia are on display, building a bridge between the past and present. In the inner courtyard, the oldest vines in the wine-growing region stand as a reminder of the long tradition of viticulture in Retz. Since 2020, the Retz Museum has been awarded the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality - a distinction for its high quality and educational work.
