Altlichtenwarth

Description

Altlichtenwarth lies in the sunny hills of the north-eastern wine district, close to the border triangle of Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Farming and viticulture characterize the gently undulating landscape.

The village nestles on the southern slope of the Hutsaulberg, which is a so-called local mountain. The Hutsaulberg itself, the highest elevation in the village at 274 m above sea level, was used for defense in earlier times (Middle Ages). The name Hutsaul comes from Hutsäule. According to popular belief, there was once a pillar up there that could be seen for miles around. In days of danger, sentries would warn people of approaching enemies by knocking over the pillar. The people took refuge in self-dug burrows, many of which can still be found today.
