Wine Hiking Trail Retz - Always follow the vines

The Retz Wine Trail connects the historic town center of Retz with the distinctive wine-growing landscape surrounding the town. Passing historic city gates and traditional farmhouses and winding through gently rolling vineyards, the route leads up the Altenberg and along the Setzberg back into town. Viticulture, the landscape, and the region’s culinary culture make this loop trail a diverse and enriching experience.

The Retz Wine Trail—a loop trail—begins at the main square by the town fountain. From there, the route leads through the Verderber Gate and the Znaimer Gate. At the next intersection, the trail branches off to the left onto Fladnitzerstraße toward Hardegg. After about 200 meters, the route turns right onto Lange Zeile, a shopping street with a traditional rural character. At the end of Lange Zeile, the Wine Hiking Trail begins, leading through the rolling vineyard landscape.

The trail winds through the vineyards and past a varietal vineyard up to the Altenberg. Along the way, visitors can gain insights into regional viticulture and the characteristic landscape of the Weinviertel. Passing the winemaker’s house on the Altenberg, the route heads toward the railroad crossing. There, the trail branches off to the right and runs along the Setzberg back toward the town. Finally, the trail rejoins the Lange Zeile. Here, the Lehninger family’s Old Town wine tavern, located at Lange Zeile No. 33, offers a chance to stop for a break and enjoy regional specialties.

The circular route connects historic city districts with the wine-growing landscape and, over a short distance, provides a glimpse into regional culture, viticulture, and rural traditions.
