Signposted circular trail through the Heldenberg vineyards.
The hiking trail takes you past a game reserve, through the Heldenberg vineyards (there are junctions to a signposted hollow hiking trail).
After a slight ascent, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the upper Schmidatal valley from the top of the hill. Numerous rest areas invite hikers to take a break. The trail continues to the highest point, the "Red Cross", then leads slightly downhill, through forest and wine cellar lanes and, shortly before the finish, through the wine cellar lane.
Please make sure to wear sturdy shoes.
The starting point is in Großwetzdorf, across from the fire station at the Graben Bridge.
After a gentle climb and passing a wildlife enclosure, we finally reach the Großwetzdorf wine fountain, which is situated on a hilltop in one of Wetzdorf’s highest vineyards. The view over the upper Schmidatal valley extends all the way to the Waldviertel region.
After a short break and a cool drink from Schober’s wine fountain, we continue through the forest. The magnificent view of Wetzdorf Castle and the Heldenberg behind it accompanies us until we reach the highest point. The “Red Cross.” There, too, we can take a break.
From here on, it’s all downhill. We alternate between walking through forests and vineyards. Our view extends all the way to the Tullnerfeld.
Finally, we arrive at the wine cellar lane, and after another 300 meters or so, we reach our starting point.
Parking is available right at the starting point or at the parking lot near the Classic Car Museum (Heldenberg municipality), which is 1 km away.
The Wetzdorf Wine Hiking Day takes place every year on May 1.
