First mentioned in a document in 1187, the town has developed over the centuries into an important educational, cultural and economic center in the southern Weinviertel. The original castle complex was built in 1240. Today, the lovingly renovated Wolkersdorf Castle with its regional music school, restaurants, event and gallery spaces is a living landmark of the town.
