Wanderquartett: Kaspar-Schrammel Weg

During a storm, avoid hiking on the Bisamberg!

Good running or hiking shoes are all you need; weather protection goes without saying.

The trail markers for the Weinviertel Hiking Quartet begin at Bahnhofsplatz in Langenzersdorf:

• Bisamberg Circular Hiking Trail (yellow)
• Dirnelwiesen Trail (blue)
• Kaspar Schrammel Trail (red-white-green)
• Tuttendörfl Circular Trail (green)

The first three trails run together past the train station building and lead to the path along the railroad tracks toward Vienna. We walk past the entrance to the platform and the kindergarten; this is followed by a sharp left turn at Praderpark, where the blue markers for the Dirnelwiesenweg branch off to the right. We turn left onto Haydnstraße, which leads into Friedhofstraße. We turn right and continue on to the cemetery. Kaspar Schrammel’s grave is located there. Turning left, we enter Dr. Ludwig-Straße, which leads into Wiener Straße. A crosswalk controlled by traffic lights allows us to cross to the uphill side of the street. We walk a few meters toward Vienna and immediately turn left onto Weintorgasse (SK). At the junction with the wine cellar lane, the Bisamberg Circular Hiking Trail branches off to the right. We turn left onto wine cellar lane toward the church. At the intersection with Obere Kirchengasse, keep right onto Magdalenenhofstraße, which climbs moderately. We walk past the Langenzersdorf museums (formerly the Hanak, Charoux, and Local History Museums, featuring exhibits by Kaspar Schrammel).
The road becomes increasingly steep. To the left are extensive vineyards; to the right is the Lanerberg settlement. After passing a cell tower, the built-up area on the right ends. We now hike uphill on a less steep, paved road. After passing through a sunken path, we emerge into open, scenic meadowland: a beautiful view of Vienna and the Danube Valley. The path leads almost level to the Magdalenenhof. On the left is the castle, which is unfortunately falling into disrepair; on the right is the Magdalenenhof restaurant with a checkpoint stamp. The checkpoint (SK) is located on the tree in front of the petting zoo. Nearby was the massive ORF Bisamberg transmission tower, which was demolished in 2010. We stay on Senderstraße and, after passing the farmstead, turn left onto a path. We pass a goat barn and head to the edge of the Falkenberg meadow. We follow the edge of the meadow to the Falkenberg playground. Via a paved farm road, we reach the edge of the forest. We do not turn left toward Eichendorff-Höhe, but continue straight into the forest. The forest trail climbs only moderately and even descends for a short stretch. Where the signs for the Korneuburg Circular Hiking Trail cross our path, we maintain our direction, climb a little further, and arrive at the former Gemeindeplatten fortifications, which we circle in a wide arc to the right.
Just before the Hagenbrunner Weg, there is another SK marker. We keep to the left on the red-white-red marked trail, climb moderately at first, and then hike on level ground to the Magdalenenhof–Gamshöhe forest road. Near Gamshöhe, we turn left onto the forest road. After a few meters, on the right side of the road, there is a tree with the next SK marker. We stay on the forest road and keep left at the fork that follows shortly afterward. The forest road continues almost level until the Bildeiche trail junction (Neue Bildeiche, Salettl, trail signs). At the conspicuous “Langenzersdorf” billboard, the descent begins on Egerweg through the Rehgraben, which leads into Magdalenenhofstraße. We pass the Langenzersdorf Museum again. At the intersection with the wine cellar lane, we turn right onto In Schiffeln. Soon we’ll cross the trailhead of the Nordwienersteig and turn left onto Jubiläumsgasse. After a short descent, we cross Hohlfeldergasse and continue on to Korneuburger Straße/B 3 (on the right, just a few minutes away, is the house where Kaspar Schrammel died, marked by a commemorative plaque). We turn left toward the traffic-light-controlled crosswalk just a few meters away. Passing the post office, we turn onto Klosterneuburger Straße (toward the Danube). After crossing Schulstraße, we arrive at Bahnhofsplatz, where the Kaspar Schrammel Trail comes to an end. Congratulations!
