Wanderquartett: Dirnelwiesenweg

The trail markers for the Weinviertel Hiking Quartet begin at Bahnhofsplatz in Langenzersdorf:

• Bisamberg Circular Hiking Trail (yellow)
• Dirnelwiesen Trail (blue)
• Kaspar Schrammel Trail (red-white-green)
• Tuttendörfl Trail (green).

The first three trails run together past the train station building and lead to the path along the railroad tracks toward Vienna. The route passes the entrance to the train platform and the kindergarten; After a sharp left turn at Praderpark, the yellow markings of the Bisamberg Circular Hiking Trail and the red-white-green signs of the Kaspar Schrammel Hiking Trail branch off to the left. We cross the street at the railroad underpass and arrive at a park area along the railroad tracks heading toward Vienna. Turn right onto a paved bike and pedestrian path and continue along the railroad tracks toward Dirnelwiese and Strebersdorf. Passing the Landlteich pond, you’ll reach the end of the path: on the right is a massive tree marked “SK Dirnelwiese.” Cross the Bahnzeile roadway and stay on the sidewalk that runs along the edge of the Dirnelwiese neighborhood. Cross Meisengasse, then Hochaustraße (there’s a railroad underpass on the right). Continue along the neighborhood and the railroad tracks. We stay on the Bahnzeile sidewalk until the bend in the road at Bahnzeile/Dirnelstraße. On the right, you’ll later see the Nationalbank sports complex if you follow the markers to the “Wien” town sign. The Grenzweg and the adjoining Stowassergasse lead along the sports complex back to the railroad tracks. Praschnikerweg joins Scheydgasse right at the Strebersdorf S-Bahn station. Ahead of us is the station snack bar and a bus stop.
We walk past the snack bar and take the underpass leading to Scheydgasse and toward the Danube. We walk along the left-hand sidewalk until we reach the intersection with Autokaderstraße, where we turn left. We continue straight ahead to the traffic-light-controlled intersection with Einzingergasse (caution!). After crossing the street, we use the bridge over the Marchfeld Canal and then find ourselves in front of the Marchfeld Canal Trail (blue signs on the left pointing toward Gerasdorf and Deutsch Wagram). We turn right and follow the blue signs along the canal toward the Danube. After passing a group of benches and some barriers, an asphalt path crosses our route. Here, we keep to the right, cross the canal, and hike toward the Langenzersdorf Süd industrial area. Just before the intersection, we turn left onto the Marchfeld Canal Trail and walk along a sandy path: past the Schönungsteich pond and then right, under the highway on-ramps, to the communications plaza. Here, at the bus stops, cross the road and walk along the sandy path toward the A 22. Where Pappelstraße branches off and a barrier blocks the Marchfeld Canal Trail, you’ll reach the Marchfeld Canal again. In a right-hand curve, you now turn back toward Langenzersdorf: along the sandy path between the A 22/Marchfeld Canal and the industrial area, and later along vast expanses of farmland. To the left is a canal weir; to the right are cross-paths leading to the Seeschlacht. We continue along the canal, pass the SK Marchfeld Canal sign (on a wooden A-frame pole), and reach Barwichgasse, where the canal path ends and the built-up area of Langenzersdorf begins. On the right (following the red-white-red signs coming from the Danube Island and leading, together with the Dirnelwiesenweg, to the Langenzersdorf train station), we turn onto Barwichgasse and proceed to the intersection with Praunstraße. Turn left onto Praunstraße, past the municipal maintenance yard, and continue to the intersection with Klosterneuburger Straße. We turn right and continue along Klosterneuburger Straße, crossing several residential streets, finally passing the sports field (on the left, Jahnstraße joins the road; a few meters further on is the club hall and a small floodplain), until we reach the railroad underpass. After the underpass, turn right toward Langenzersdorf’s train station square, where the Dirnelwiesen loop trail ends. Congratulations!

After completing the hike, you’ll receive an IVV stamp for each route offered. In Langenzersdorf, at Konditorei Pfaffl, you can purchase scorecards (€2.00 each) and pick up trail brochures for free.
