Blutkirche - Hubertus Chapel with rest area - recommendation: detour to the Bründl - Europahaus
Surrounded by vineyards and orchards, the small town of Pulkau with around 1,500 inhabitants lies at the transition between the Waldviertel and Weinviertel in a Tuscan-like landscape and bears witness to its historical past.
Tip: Picnic in the vineyard
You can enjoy a picnic at a panoramic rest area on all wine trails. The basket is filled with typical regional delicacies, a bottle of peppery, spicy Grüne Veltliner (or a bottle of grape juice) and a bottle of water. The path leads to the right toward Kirchengasse, past the Blutkirche to the former parish school (1397). From here, take the slightly uphill sidewalk. Once at the top, the path leads to the right along the cemetery wall. At the fork, turn left and then immediately right. After a few meters, turn left, slightly uphill. Follow the path along the vineyards until it leads downhill again. Turn left, then turn right after about 50 meters. Follow the road until you reach the elementary school. From here, take the footpath leading downhill. Cross the square and then the main street. Head slightly left, past the fire station, until you reach the bridge. Turn slightly right through the old nursery. Please stay on the left side of the path; the right side is private property and may not be used. After passing the buildings, follow the path to the road. Turn right and walk along the wine cellars until you reach Bahnstraße. Cross the street and continue to the right on “Am Berg.” Later, the path branches off to the right. Pass the transmitter, a wayside shrine, and a stone—the forest is God’s temple.
If you’ve had enough, you can take the trail to the right here over the “Wehrleitn” back to Pulkau. The trail continues between the forest and the vineyards. At the fork, turn right and head downhill toward the recreation center. However, you can also continue straight ahead here. After a few minutes, you’ll reach the beautiful rest area near the Hubertus Chapel.
It’s worth walking a few more minutes to visit the Bründl. From here, head downhill along the Quellenweg to the recreation center. After the bridge, the trail turns left and then, shortly afterward, right uphill. Follow it until you reach the wider paved road and cross it. After the leaf tunnel (a path leading through dense foliage), turn left uphill and follow this path. After a short while, turn right. You can already see the spire of St. Michael ahead of you. Head toward it until you reach the Europahaus. Pass through the archway to return to Rathausplatz.
