Romea Strata "Mikulov - Stockerau"

The Romea Strata is a network of historic routes that once led travelers from northeastern and central Europe to Rome. It crosses several countries—Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Italy—and connects the Baltic Sea to the heart of Italy via centuries-old paths. These routes have been traveled for generations, facilitating cultural exchange and shaping a shared European identity. Today, the Romea Strata invites hikers and pilgrims to follow in these footsteps, thereby fostering cross-border dialogue and a new appreciation for a shared heritage. In 2025, the Romea Strata was certified as a Cultural Route by the Council of Europe.

In the Weinviertel region, the Romea Strata runs from Mikulov to Stockerau along the Weinviertel Way of St. James. The route leads through Falkenstein and Poysdorf to Mistelbach. It continues over the Leiser Mountains (Buschberg & Oberleiser Berg) to Großrußbach and Karnabrunn. Via Michelberg and Waschberg, the route leads to Stockerau. This is where the Weinviertel section of the Romea Strata ends. A diverse landscape—ranging from vineyards and wine cellar lanes to steppe grasslands—characterizes the route. Numerous churches, including the St. James churches in Falkenstein and Leitzersdorf, invite you to pause and reflect.

Tip: The journey continues from Stockerau to Vienna on the Martinusweg (Via Sancti Martini), through Vienna on the Vienna Way of St. James, and from Vienna to Mariazell on the Via Sacra or the Vienna Pilgrimage Trail.
