Caution is advised when crossing the B35—near Schrattenthal—as there is heavy traffic in this area.

The route begins at the Retz train station, from where you cycle north, past the town parish church, until you reach the CHARDONNAY Wine Cycle Trail. This trail takes you out of Retz’s old town. At first, you’ll cycle past old farmhouses until you finally find yourself in the midst of the gently rolling wine-growing countryside. In Oberretzbach, the route climbs slightly uphill, but the ascent is definitely worth it, as at the very top awaits the Heilige Stein, a sacred site featuring a small chapel, a place of spiritual energy, and a viewing platform with a breathtaking view stretching far into the Czech Republic.

You’ll then continue cycling along the Czech border, past the border crossing to Mitterretzbach and Unterretzbach. Here, you should get off your bike for a moment and visit the beautiful Anger gardens in the center of town. You’re allowed to walk through many of the small gardens; there’s a designated walking loop.

Back in the saddle—still following the Chardonnay Wine Cycle Route—you’ll cross State Road L 1027, and now the route heads up the Schatzberg. At an impressive 306 meters, it’s known for its top-quality vineyards. Once you reach the top—just a short detour away—the Südmähren Warte overlook stands, offering a fantastic panoramic view. From here on, follow the Wine and Culture Bike Trail. On the other side, the route heads downhill again to Kleinriedenthal. Shortly after the wine cellar lane, you’ll rejoin the Chardonnay Wine Cycle Trail all the way to Retz.

But the tour isn’t over yet. Nothing stands in the way of taking a break on the historic main square in one of the cozy outdoor dining areas. You’ll then set off on the Weinviertel DAC Bike Tour and follow it to Unternalb and on through the wine-growing landscape until you reach the beautiful Öhlbergkellergasse in Pillersdorf. Here, another quick stop at the Radlerrast ( wine cellar) would be a great idea. Passing vineyards and fields once more, you’ll arrive in Zellerndorf, where, at the end of the village, you’ll turn left into the Maulavern wine cellar lane. This charming wine cellar lane is lined with lovingly restored wine press houses. You should definitely get off your bike here and take a few photos!

From here, you’ll join the Weinviertel wine cellar lane cycling loop. After a few kilometers, you’ll reach Deinzendorf, where the route leads through the so-called “Hintaus – im Prater” to Dietmannsdorf: an idyllic stretch along a stream. The next town is the picturesque Schrattenthal, Austria’s smallest wine-growing town. It is home to renowned winemakers and the fairytale-like Schrattenthal Castle. The Stadtgrabenkellergasse is also worth a stop here. The next town is Obermarkersdorf, where you’ll switch to the Weinviertel DAC Bike Tour. After a short loop through the town—which also takes you past the Weinviertel rest area at Jägerteich —you’ll head back onto the “Botanik” route toward Obernalb and finally back to the center of Retz. You’ll ride to the train station, where you’ll have reached your destination.

Parking is free at the train station.

Please note: Short-term parking is in effect within the city center. Therefore, please park outside the main square.

Retz is located on the Czech border and is easily accessible by car via state highways.

Retz is very easily accessible by train from Vienna.

There is also a train connection to Retz from Znaim.

The route is suitable for touring bikes, mountain bikes, and gravel bikes.

Of course, you can start the bike tour at any location.
