Hiking tour Starting from Stillfried, Bahngasse
Start / Finish: Stillfried/March
Start / Finish: Stillfried/March
Make sure to wear sturdy shoes
Start at the train station in Stillfried, cross the federal highway, and after about 100 meters you’ll reach the intersection with the main street in Stillfried. Keep to the right, pass the historic rectory, and you’ll reach the museum, which is located in the former elementary school. The “Stillfried Center for Prehistory” museum is definitely worth a visit. Then turn left onto “Schulgasse” and, after a few minutes’ walk uphill, you’ll reach the fortified church—visible from afar—which is the landmark of Stillfried. The church has existed since around 1045 and was first mentioned in a document in 1241.
The circular hiking trail first takes you to the left, past the church, toward Kellerberg Stillfried. Passing the narrow, romantic wine cellar lanes—so typical of the Weinviertel region—with their many wine cellars, keep to the right, pass the Staringer Organic Wine Tavern and Wine Cellar, and after about 100 meters, turn right again into a sunken path, which you’ll cross. The trail continues to the left along the edge of the forest (on your right) and past numerous vineyards and fields (on your left), winding through wild and romantic sunken paths.
The trail continues from the edge of the forest to the left, cutting through the idyllic vineyards. Enjoy the view of the surrounding villages, the beautiful St. Roch Chapel, toward Slovakia and the Carpathian Mountains, or toward Lower Austria’s highest mountain, the Schneeberg.
The trail then leads you to the right through more vineyards and finally to the right again through the forest until you—passing a small wayside shrine—reach the state road between Grub and Ebenthal. Keep to the right and walk about 500 m downhill along the state road toward Grub before turning right again into the forest. Passing a small chapel and a wild boar enclosure, the trail eventually leads along the edge of the forest, where you can already see the center of Grub, which you’ll eventually reach.
Keep to the right, following “Ebenthaler Straße” through Grub, passing the St. John’s Chapel on your right, and then continuing straight ahead and uphill through an avenue of linden trees. Passing an idyllically situated adventure playground complete with an observation tower, you’ll reach the end of the circular hiking trail, where you’ll once again come to the church—or, to the left, the familiar path leading to the museum and the starting point at the train station.
Note: Right inside the train station building, there is a farmers' market with a rest stop, which is open every Saturday morning. Directly across from the train station is the Stillfriederhof inn. Furthermore, there are several excellent wine taverns and Buschenschanks (typical taverns) in both Stillfried and Grub that invite you to take a break or enjoy a cozy end to your hike. You can find the respective opening hours on the Angern municipality’s website: www.angern.at
Parking is available right at the train station, at the tour's starting point.
Stillfried is accessible by train.
