Ostösterreichischer Grenzlandweg 07

The Eastern Austrian Border Trail, which opened in 1979, runs through four federal states:
Lower Austria, Vienna, Burgenland, and Styria
Its total length is approximately 720 km.

For the most part, the trail follows Austria’s external border, though from Hardegg onward it cuts straight through the Weinviertel region. Passing through Mailberg, Ernstbrunn, Hagenbrunn, and Orth/Donau, the trail eventually reaches the Slovakian border, where it continues along the border until it reaches southern Burgenland. The final stage leads through Styria until the hiking tour finally ends in Bad Radkersburg on the Slovenian border.

Section through the Weinviertel (165 km):
From Retz, hike along Kremser Straße to Ragelsdorf until you reach Federal Highway 2. From there, take a dirt road to Hutberg and on to Haugsdorf. Follow Laaer Straße to the Alberndorf train station. Follow the path through vineyards to the Locatelli Forest. Crossing the Hadres–Immendorf road, you’ll approach the summit of the Buschberg. The wine country lies before you. To the east, the Staatzer Klippe rises up; to the south, you’ll see the Leiser Mountains; and directly ahead, a wine cellar lane leads to Mailberg. At the edge of Mailberg, follow the road to Großharras. Then head toward Stronsdorf, following a stream. Just before Patzmannsdorf, you’ll rejoin the road. Take the so-called “Hochstraße” until just before Klement. After passing the Oberleis pilgrimage church, continue on to Ernstbrunn. At the former train station, follow the federal highway toward Korneuburg. There, you’ll reach a farm road on the northern slope of the Gebmannsberg, which you’ll follow all the way to Großrußbach. Once there, follow the Kirchensteig toward Kreuttal. After a long hike through the woods, you’ll come to the road to Manhartsbrunn. At the southern end of the village, take the road to Seebarn. Shortly after reaching the forest, the trail joins the Enzersfeld road. Walk around Hagenbrunn until you reach the Hagenbrunner Weg. The trail leads directly up the Bisamberg. A short descent leads to Langenzersdorf, where you’ll find yourself just outside the gates of Vienna. Once you’ve made it through Vienna, take the path through the Lobau to reach the town of Groß Enzersdorf. North of the Danube—at times even right next to the river—the trail takes you through the two picturesque towns of “Orth an der Donau” and “Eckartsau,” both of which are home to beautiful castles. Near Stopfenreuth, you’ll have the opportunity to cross the Danube. Here, Austria’s easternmost town awaits you: Hainburg an der Donau. Passing through a wooded area, you’ll finally reach the Slovakian border.
