This tour is especially appealing to nature lovers—it features a special “natural gem.” Discover the unique salt steppes near Zwingendorf, a habitat for numerous rare plants (halophytes) and small animals on salt-rich soils.
The short loop of the Natural Gems Bike Route starts in Laa an der Thaya (near the Hotel der Therme Laa) and initially winds through the town. You’ll then cycle along a longer stretch through vast fields, reaching Hanfthal and then Großharras. Here you have two options: You can extend the tour via Mailberg and Seefeld-Kadolz, cycling through an area dotted with vineyards and charming wine cellar lanes. Mailberg, in particular, is well worth exploring for its lovely atmosphere.
The short tour continues via Zwingendorf. Nature lovers, in particular, will find plenty to enjoy here. Where the sea once stretched out millions of years ago, Lower Austria’s last remaining salt steppes can be found today. These protected salt biotopes also serve as a habitat for numerous rare bird species and are particularly impressive during the warmer months.
The tour then takes you onward toward the Czech Republic to the “South Moravia Memorial.” Here, the route turns right and runs through Wulzeshofen—directly along the Kamp-Thaya-March Cycle Route—back to Laa/Thaya.
You can also return to Laa/Thaya via the Czech Republic: from the memorial, continue straight on to Jaroslavice (Joslowitz) and follow the Iron Curtain Trail (EuroVelo 13).
Tip: After your long ride, you can relax and unwind at the Therme der Sinne.
The route starts near the "Therme Laa" hotel, where parking is also available. Both regular bicycles and e-bikes can be rented at the "Therme Laa" hotel.
By car, Laa/Thaya can be reached directly via Federal Highway “B6” from Vienna or “B46” from Mistelbach.
Laa/Thaya can be reached by taking the Schnellbahn from Vienna (via Wolkersdorf and Mistelbach). There is also a bus service from Mistelbach's main square to Laa's town square.
