The March floodplains are among the most beautiful and interesting floodplain landscapes in Central Europe.
Make sure to wear sturdy shoes
The trail starts at the train station in Stillfried. Coming from the parking lot, cross the tracks at the railroad crossing. Turn right and follow the paved path along the railroad tracks toward Vienna. After about 400 m, you’ll come to an old branch of the March River on your left and get your first brief glimpse of the beauty and fascination of this unique nature reserve with its countless water birds. You can spot numerous storks and herons, and beavers also thrive here.
About 700 m from the train station, the paved path ends and merges into the flood protection levee. Leave the path immediately after the levee begins and turn left. Following the old channel of the March—or rather, the edge of the forest (on your left) and the meadows (on your right)—you’ll reach the riparian forest and eventually the March River. Keep to the right and follow the March downstream through the impressive floodplain landscape, past beautiful meadows and numerous romantic fishermen’s huts.
After hiking about 2 km along the March, our marked trail reaches the “turning point” and leads you sharply to the right into the flood protection dam at a clearing. Walking along the crest of the levee, where you’ll enjoy the view of the wonderful landscape and nature, you’ll return to the starting point at Stillfried Station.
“Long-distance hikers” are welcome to continue past the aforementioned “turning point”—departing from the marked trail—and follow the path along the March River to the left, where, after another 3 km or so, you’ll reach the ferry in Angern across the border into Slovakia (there’s also a very nice café there). From there, you can then take the path back over the flood protection dam until you rejoin the marked “March Hiking Trail” and continue on to the starting point, Stillfried Station.
Note: Right inside the train station building, there is a farmers' market with a rest stop, which is open every Saturday morning. Directly across from the station is the Stillfriederhof inn. Furthermore, there are several excellent wine taverns and Buschenschanks in both Stillfried and Grub that invite you to take a break or enjoy a cozy end to your hike.
