Hiking tour Starting from Hautzendorf, Rosalia Chapel
Start / Finish: Hautzendorf
Start / Finish: Hautzendorf
As the "green lung" of the Weinviertel, the Kreuttal valley is ideal for shorter and longer hikes or other leisure activities at any time of year. The large forest areas, the hilly landscape and the well-known Weinviertel hospitality make the Kreuttal a particularly attractive leisure region.
The longest of the four marked circular hiking trails connects all three villages in the municipality of Kreuttal. From the starting point at the Rosalia Chapel in HAUTZENDORF, the hiking trail leads briefly along Traunfelderstraße and then turns left along the Steinbergbach stream to the north in the direction of Heiligen Berg.
On this path you pass the Marienkapelle and the Marienbründl, which was redesigned in 1991. Continuing along this path, the pilgrimage church "St. Lambert am Heiligen Berg" is located on the wooded hill of the Heiligen Berg. This church was first mentioned in a document in 1170. The church tower houses a bell dated 1452.
After a short rest and continuing on the path, turn west after approx. 100 meters. Crossing the main road (Landeshauptstraße 6), you reach the beautiful forest area of the "Hundsberg", the highest point of which is 331 meters above sea level.
Following the signposts, you reach the Waldandacht, which stands in a beautiful, shady forest clearing. This place invites you to take a short break and enjoy the tranquillity of the forest.
Following the trail markings westwards through the forest, you come to HORNSBURG, which was named Europe's most beautiful flower village in 2005 as part of the ENTENTE FLORALE.
The hiking trail continues south through the village of Hornsburg and over the Sandberg to UNTEROLBERNDORF.
Here, it is worth making a detour to the forest educational and adventure hiking trail with the 25-metre-high observation tower, which was built in 1984/1985. From this observation tower, you have a beautiful view over the surrounding villages and, on a clear day, even as far as the Carpathian Mountains and Schneeberg.
After refreshments at the Magister inn in Unterolberndorf, you walk back along the Rußbachstraße to the Sandberg in the direction of HAUTZENDORF. Walking through the wine cellar lane with its high loess walls, you pass the "Zur Eisenbahn" inn, where you can take another short break before returning to the starting point and starting your journey home.
This circular hiking trail passes through all three villages in the Kreuttal valley. It begins in the village of Hautzendorf at the Rosalien Chapel, not far from the S-Bahn station, and follows Traunfelderstraße for a short distance before turning left and heading north along the Steinbergbach stream toward Heiligen Berg. Following this path, you’ll reach Heiligen Berg and then turn west.
After crossing State Highway 6, you pass through an underpass beneath the S2 rapid transit line and enter the beautiful forested area of the “Hundsberg” (331 m).
Following the trail markers, we reach the Waldandacht, where four trails intersect. From there, continuing westward, we hike through the shady forest to Hornsburg.
Here, we continue the hike south toward Unterolberndorf over the Sandberg, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding villages. Then we head toward Hautzendorf, and once again through the wine cellar lane with its high loess cliffs, we return to the starting point.
There are a few parking spaces right at the starting point.
If you’re driving from Vienna, the easiest route is via the B7 (Brünnerstraße). Take the B7 to Wolkersdorf; from there, it’s about 10 km toward Kreuttal.
Alternatively, you can reach Kreuttal from Korneuburg or Laa via the B6 (Laaer Bundesstraße). Here, you’ll need to turn off toward Kreuttal near the town of Hetzmannsdorf. After about 3 km, you’ll reach Ritzendorf and continue on the LH 30 to Unterolberndorf or to Hautzendorf.
- BY EXPRESS TRAIN: The S2 express train line from Vienna (or Wiener Neustadt) to Mistelbach also stops in Kreuttal at the following stations:
- SCHLEINBACH: The SCHLEINBACH station also serves Unterolberndorf, though the village is a good 1 km away from the station.
- HAUTZENDORF: Several circular hiking trails start from Hautzendorf.
The rapid transit train from Vienna to Mistelbach runs hourly; during the day, it runs every half hour as far as the Schleinbach station. You can find more information on schedules and fares on the websites of the VERKEHRSVERBUND OSTREGION and the ÖSTERREICHISCHE BUNDESBAHNEN .
