Description
The wine experience tour is so beautiful because it touches the Waldviertel and shows the difference between the wide fields of the northern part and the wine landscape in the southern part. The Manharsberg is actually considered a "mountain" in this region because it is the highest elevation far and wide. It is popularly said that it is always "one Janker colder" above the Manharsberg.
An entertaining program awaits in the surrounding area: whether wine cellar lane tours in the Marktweg cellar lane in Röschitz or the Bründl in Pulkau, where the water of the same name has its source.
Many places offer interesting insights into the historical winegrowing culture of this region. The multi-award-winning Veltliner stronghold of Röschitz and the village of Schrattenthal - the smallest wine town in Austria - impress with their excellent wines and are a must-see for all visitors.
The best place to enjoy the view is from the Europawarte in Waitzendorf, which offers an excellent view over the entire Retzer Land and into the Waldviertel.
- safety instructions There are 3 sections that are unpaved but still very well passable by bike. Caution is advised when crossing the L41 - between Leodagger and Passendorf - as this road is heavily trafficked.
- Route description The start is at Weitersfeld train station. First, you ride towards the town center; at the L41, you turn left at the Volksbank and initially follow the "Weinerlebnistour Retzer Land". The route leads you out of Weitersfeld along the L1065. Later, turn right towards Obermixnitz, then continue to Waitzendorf and Schrattenthal. Upon reaching the main road, turn left, then immediately right again. From here, you ride along the WEINVIERTLER KELLERGASSENRUNDE bike path to Dietmannsdorf. In town, ride straight ahead, then cross the main road (Bike path 811). It goes slightly uphill; after the incline, turn left and then immediately right again. From here, follow the connecting bike path or a shortcut of the WEINVIERTEL DAC to Röschitz. This path is partly unpaved but well passable by bike. The Veltliner stronghold Röschitz is known for its great wines and picturesque winegrowers' farms. Here, you will also find two cyclist rest areas providing refreshments with cool drinks. Continue along the WEINVIERTEL DAC bike path northwards to Groß Reipersdorf and Rafing. Shortly before Pulkau, the path leads into the forest, over the Pulkauer Brünnl to the center. The woodland here is unpaved but manageable with a bike. Pulkau is a really nice little town worth taking a round in.The route continues along the WEINVIERTEL DAC bike path to Leodagger. Here, turn left twice, then leave the WEINVIERTEL DAC bike path and ride along the L1152, mainly slightly uphill. Although this road is not paved here, it is well passable. At the crossing L41, turn right – you only stay briefly on the busier L41 road. Just after the bus stop, turn left. This path is partly unpaved again but very suitable for biking. You automatically pass through the towns of Passendorf and Theras. However, you leave the latter on your left, and when you reach the L1197, turn right. Then continue to Obermixnitz, through the town, and turn left before the church. Immediately turn left again and ride along 1153 to a fork where you keep right. Continue straight ahead, and soon you can see Weitersfeld from afar. You ride back to the train station, thus completing the circuit and reaching your destination.
