Make sure to wear sturdy shoes

The trail starts at the train station in Stillfried. Coming from the parking lot, cross the tracks at the railroad crossing. Start by heading briefly to the right, but after just a few meters, the trail branches off to the left through the floodplain toward the March River.

Once you reach the March River, keep to the left and hike a short distance upstream along the river. After about 300 meters, the trail branches off to the left again; following an old channel of the March, you’ll reach the flood protection dam. You will now turn right, walking along the flood protection dam at the edge of the floodplain forest, past fields and meadows, until the dam ends after about 2 km near the railroad tracks. Now keep to the left, following the path alongside the railroad tracks, and after about 250 meters, cross the bridge over the railroad tracks and then the state highway; this marks the beginning of the “second part” of the hiking trail:

Cross the state highway and continue straight ahead, walking slightly uphill along the edge of the forest (on your left), past fields and vineyards (on your right), until you reach the “Haspelberg” and the county road to Grub. Now keep to the left, walk about 300 meters along the state road, and then turn left again, following the dirt path along the edge of the forest and then straight through the vineyards. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the immediate and surrounding area, as well as the route you’ve already covered. The trail rejoins the state road, which you’ll cross; then continue straight ahead over the idyllic Gruber Kellerberg and finally reach the center of Grub, where the Auwanderweg trail joins the“Panoramawanderweg”(see description):

You’ll then turn left, walk a short distance through Grub, pass the St. John’s Chapel on your right, and then continue straight ahead, uphill through an avenue of linden trees, past an idyllic adventure playground complete with a lookout tower, until you finally reach the fortified church—the landmark of Stillfried/Grub. If you’re not tired yet, you’re welcome to follow the “Panorama Hiking Trail” from here, which will bring you back to this point after a loop of about 10 km. Otherwise, don’t walk past the fortified church; instead, turn left before reaching it, take the dirt road, and then head downhill along “Schulgasse,” where after a few minutes you’ll reach the museum, located in the former elementary school. The “Stillfried Center for Prehistory” museum is definitely worth a visit.

Now turn right again, pass the historic rectory, and after about 100 meters, turn left again at the intersection, where you can already see your starting point—the train station.

Note: Right inside the train station building, there’s a farmers' market with a snack bar that’s open every Saturday morning. Directly across from the station is the Stillfriederhof inn. Furthermore, there are several excellent wine taverns and Buschenschanks (typical taverns) in both Stillfried and Grub that invite you to take a break or enjoy a cozy end to your hike.
