Schwedenhöhlen

Historical sites

Description

In the Rohrwald forest, west of Harmannsdorf-Rückersdorf, lie the Schwedenhöhlen - also known as Schwedenlöcher. These are caves carved out of loess; a group of earth caves that are well known to the local population and are frequently visited. Almost everyone who knows these caves also knows that they are places of refuge. Legend has it that they were built as hiding places for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages during the Swedish Wars in the 17th century, shortly before the Swedish general Torstenson occupied the town of Korneuburg. But there are also reports of Hussites, Turks and Hungarians, and some even associate the caves with ancient places of worship or fortifications on the nearby hill on which Kreuzenstein Castle stands. The caves are accessible; some of the rooms inside are very impressive.
