Pfarrkirche Hl. Margaretha
Church
Description
Wolkersdorf was first mentioned in documents as a parish in 1328, but its origins may date back to the 12th century. The church dedicated to St. Margaretha was built by Stephan von Slaet between 1341 and 1350. A predecessor building was located in the area of the "Alter Markt". Another medieval sacred building was the Gothic chapel dedicated to St. Barbara in the castle, which was demolished in 1889 and two pillars of which were used in the construction of the Maria Lourdes Chapel (Alleegasse) in 1890. The originally manorial parish of Wolkersdorf, whose parish area was limited to the local area until the incorporation of the branch church of Riedenthal in 1971, passed to the sovereign (Habsburgs) in the 15th century. Today, the church features two stylistic periods: the Gothic presbytery and the Baroque nave built in 1727 under Emperor Charles VI. The 6 statues on the church staircase also date from 1727. The church tower was completed in 1754 with financial support from Maria Theresa.
