Wartberg Kirche
Church
Description
The Wartberg church is considered the "landmark of the Schmidatal" because it is visible from afar due to its location on the Kirchenberg. The impressive panoramic view over the Schmidatal extends to the Vienna Woods in the south and, on a clear day, to the Schneeberg and Ötscher on the horizon, and to the Retzer Land and the Czech Republic in the north. To the west, you can see the foothills of the Manhartsberg and thus look into the Waldviertel with the Kogelsteine and Feenhaube in the foreground. To the east, you can look across vineyards and fields to the neighboring villages along the course of the Schmida river. Wild grasses and herbs as well as rare wildflowers grow on the protected dry grassland around the church and at the site of the former "Hiatahittn", information boards provide an overview of the habitat of the great bustard and imperial eagle, which can be observed here from time to time, along with numerous other bird species.
The gothic/baroque church can be visited on request with a guided tour (duration approx. 30 minutes), but there is also a church service every Sunday or Saturday evening before (please enquire about starting times).A walk through the wine cellar lane and vineyards (circular route approx. 30 minutes) also takes you past a cyclist's rest stop and, on request, a drink, wine tasting or cellar party with cellar snack is also offered in a nearby press house.
