Kirche Obermarkersdorf St. Nikolaus und Urban
Church
Description
The parish church was built between 1383 and 1389, the exterior is baroque with a Gothic choir and north tower, which is the oldest part of the church. In November 1425, Obermarkesdorf and its church suffered an invasion by the Hussite horde, during which the church was damaged. Reconstruction began in 1489 and the choir and tower, as well as the interior, date from this period. A massive fire in 1720 destroyed a large part of the village and the church. The parish church was rebuilt until 1757 and extended with a simple nave.
The special features of the church are the polygonal, closed choir with 3-stage buttresses, the Gothic tower with baroque, octagonal superstructure and tent roof, and the Jesswagner organ. The organ was built in 1759 by the Viennese organ builder Matthäus Jesswagner and is one of the last two playable organs of its kind in Austria.
