Dernberg Haslach
Scenic lookout
Description
The medieval "Ternberg" hillfort, also known as "Dernberg", "Dirnberg" or "Tennberg", is picturesquely situated on the south side of a ridge in the small village of Haslach, around 2 km northwest of the village chapel. This impressive earthwork is visible from afar and bears witness to the rich history of the region. To the west of the site was the village of "Ternperc", which was mentioned in documents in 1208 and abandoned in the 17th century. Although the fortress itself is not mentioned in the historical documents, finds of pottery shards from the 13th century indicate that it was used in the Middle Ages. Ceramic shards from the Bronze and Hallstatt periods have also been discovered, indicating that a fortification may have existed here in prehistoric times, which was expanded into a hillfort in the Middle Ages. In 2002, the medieval "Ternberg" hillfort was placed under a preservation order by the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments, which underlines its importance and historical value. A visit to this fascinating site offers a unique insight into the history and culture of the region.
