The wine-growing village of Rußbach was first mentioned in a document around 1171. An entry from 1898 in the village chronicle refers to 1,000 Viertel of vineyards. Since then, viticulture has played a major role in shaping the village’s economy and culture. The larger municipality of Rußbach, comprising the three cadastral districts of Niederrußbach, Oberrußbach, and Stranzendorf, has existed since the municipal merger of 1970.
Wine
Approximately 160 hectares of vineyards are cultivated within the municipality of Rußbach. The wines from this region are widely renowned. The charming historic wine cellar lanes invite you to take long walks. From the vineyards, a magnificent view opens up over the Tullnerfeld all the way to Schneeberg and Ötscher. Places worth seeing include the parish church in Niederrußbach and the branch church on the hill in Oberrußbach, which was once an old fortification. The Hubertus Chapel in the vineyards offers a lovely resting spot for walkers and is a great vantage point.
