The market town of Burgschleinitz-Kühnring is located in the Horn district on the long ridge of the Manhartsberg—the border between the Waldviertel and Weinviertel regions. Numerous prehistoric and early historical finds attest to the hundreds of millions of years of geological formation and the 30,000-year history of settlement in this historically significant landscape.
The municipal area consists of the villages of Amelsdorf, Burgschleinitz, Buttendorf, Harmannsdorf, and Kühnring, as well as Matzelsdorf, Reinprechtspölla, Sachsendorf, Sonndorf, and Zogelsdorf.
Burgschleinitz-Kühnring: History & Stories
The municipality’s historical trails are particularly fascinating: Kühnring Castle—on the site of which the parish church now stands —was built as early as the first half of the 12th century.
Zogelsdorf stone, in turn, was considered an important material for stonemasons during the Baroque and Historicist periods.
In addition, the world-famous Nobel Peace Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner wrote her book *Lay Down Your Arms!* at Harmannsdorf Castle. For this reason, the international Bertha von Suttner Association is also based in Harmannsdorf. Today, however, the impressive castle can only be viewed from the outside.
