Route description Wine and Culture Cycle Route

The "Wine and Culture Cycle Route" has its starting point at the historic main square in Retz in the Retzer Land region. Retz itself is a wine metropolis through the centuries. From here you cycle through gently rolling terrain, past idyllic vineyards in a northerly direction to Oberretzbach. At the "Holy Stone" - an ancient cult site with one of the most beautiful shell stones in Austria - you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Retzer Land, the Pulka Valley and the South Moravian region. Then you cross the border into the Czech Republic. Via Hnanice, Popice and Konice you cycle through the wine country of the Znojmo region to the outskirts of Znojmo (Znojmo). A detour to the city is definitely worthwhile, as there is a lot to discover, such as the "Znojmo Castle", the "St. Catherine's Rotunda or the "underground cellar corridors", to name just a few sights.

Along the Thaya and past the Bruck monastery, you continue cycling through the Znojmo countryside to Chvalovice and Šatov until you reach the Austrian side again. Along the tour you continue through Unterretzbach and past the Schatzberg back to the starting point in Retz. There is still a lot for you to discover here: You should definitely explore the Retzer Erlebniskeller, which, by the way, is the largest historic wine cellar in Austria. The high medieval old town is also particularly worth seeing. The town's landmark, Austria's only operational windmill, is also worth a visit and a successful conclusion to this tour.

Directions

Retz is located on the Czech border and is very easy to reach by car via federal roads.

Coming from Vienna, Retz is very easy to reach by train. There is also a train connection to Retz from Znojmo.
