Description
The Weinerlebnistour Pulkautal runs mostly along the river of the same name, near the border with the Czech Republic, and starts and ends in the municipality of Pernersdorf. Fields, fertile vineyards, and whitewashed cellar lanes characterize this valley. Not least because it has the highest density of cellar lanes in the western Weinviertel.
Besides the remarkable Hadres cellar lane – the longest continuously built cellar lane in the world – or the "Zipf" cellar lane in Mailberg – the only listed cellar lane in Lower Austria – you can also admire the Malteser Castle Mailberg and Seefeld Castle on this route.
Although the Weinviertel is mainly associated with white wine, the Pulkautal also has some small "red wine islands" where, thanks to special climatic conditions, a very special red wine thrives.
If you are a fan of Alfred Komarek’s Polt novels or their film adaptations, you will also enjoy this area. On the Weinerlebnistour Pulkautal, you can visit the original filming locations of the TV crime series. The author Alfred Komarek discovered the Pulkautal as a special spot for himself and visits very often.

Route description Bike Route Recommendation - Weinerlebnistour Pulkautal
You start the route at the fire station and cycle north along the WEINRADWEG PORTUGIESER. In Karlsdorf, you leave the PORTUGIESER at the church square and turn left to Ragelsdorf, where you switch to the WEINRADWEG CHARDONNAY. From Jetzelsdorf, you continue again on the WEINRADWEG PORTUGIESER. The following villages are Jetzelsdorf, Haugsdorf, Alberndorf, Untermarkersdorf, Hadres, and Seefeld-Kadolz. The fairy-tale-like Seefeld-Kadolz castle can be seen from afar. At the outdoor pool, you have the opportunity to cool down. The route first passes by the village, directly into the scenic cellar lane, where you will find two cyclist rests to stop by. Then you make a loop and return to the village. From here, you switch to the POLT RADWANDERWEG until Mailberg.
Arriving in the picturesque "Mailberg Valley," you briefly leave the POLT RADWANDERWEG to take a detour into the idyllic Zipf cellar lane. At the Malteser Order’s castle, you rejoin the POLT RADWANDERWEG. You then continue along the Rosenau cellar lane (with a Keller-Wohlfühlplatz) and over the vineyards – with wonderful views of the Pulkautal – to the Obritz cellar lane.
It goes back westward, along vineyards and old vineyard huts. Just before Hadres, you turn left and follow the route along the "Hintaus" of the Pulkautal with old barns and small farm gardens until Untermarkersdorf before reaching Alberndorf. You continue back along the path you have already ridden in the other direction, through Haugsdorf to Jetzelsdorf. Further on, at Peigarten, you make a loop to the remarkable Peregriniplatzl, the cellar lane with large shady trees and benches to rest. You follow the route to Pernersdorf, where you are also traveling through the "Hintaus."
Back on the main road, it is only a short distance until you arrive again at the starting point by the fire station.
Author's tip
The route is suitable for trekking bikes, mountain bikes, and gravel bikes.
Of course, the bike route can also be started at any desired location.
The route itself is not signposted. However, the WEINfinder app will guide you on the right track.
The route has hardly any inclines and is thus quite "chill," giving you plenty of time to stop at one or another cyclist rest area. In the Pulkautal, these rest spots are called "Keller-Wohlfühlplätze." They can be found in the cellar lanes of Jetzelsdorf, Haugsdorf, Alberndorf, Hadres, Seefeld-Kadolz, and Mailberg.
The lovingly restored cellars offer, from April to October – daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. – chilled drinks as well as information material about the region and bike repair tools.
The route does not pass directly by the Keller-Wohlfühlplätze, but they are already signposted along the bike route. These are only short detours that are worth taking. The cellar lanes are always signposted.
With the WEINfinder app, you can explore these and be guided there by navigation.
