Cycling holiday with wine

Rally in the Veltlinerland

Cycling with pleasure. No other word describes the Weinviertler cycle routes better, after all, several wine taverns, winegrower yards and cellar lanes invite you to rest and enjoy. The 1,600 km long cycle network in Austria's largest wine-growing region is full of romantic vineyards and historic buildings, which are not only beautiful to look at but also worth a visit.

Starting from Poysdorf, you will experience cycling pleasure in a class of its own and explore the following tours:

  • Welschriesling (39 km): The tour starts in Poysdorf and takes you to the crazy village of Herrbaumgarten. There it is recommended to make a detour into the "nonseum" in order to be impressed by the inventions of a somewhat different kind. The hilly landscape leads you further over Altlichtenwarth to Großkrut. Over the romantic cellar mountain you can make a detour to the Wartbert Warte and from there marvel at the wonderful expanse of the Weinviertel. It continues via Walterskirchen back to Poysdorf.

  • Veltliner (68 km): The route takes you from Poysdorf past the castle ruins of Staatz. Regular guided ruin hikes from May to October familiarise you with the history of the region (please book a guided tour in advance). At the foot of the Staatzer Klippe, the finest pralines and confectionery are made. If you are interested in a visit, please let us know. Via Kottingneusiedl you reach Wildendürnbach with the well worth seeing cellar valley "Galgenberg". The Galgenberg was named "Kellergasse des Jahres 2013” (cellar valley of the year). Parallel to the Czech border you reach the small village of Ottenthal, from where it is not far to the small wine village of Falkenstein. To Poysdorf you have to travel approx. 17km. Our tip: Do not miss the Nonseum in Herrbaumgarten and marvel at the bizarre inventions exhibited here.

  • Sylvaner (64 km): You start this tour from Poysdorf and go via Walterskirchen and Bullendorf to Wilfersdorf. Here you will find the Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf, which is one of the TOP excursion destinations in Lower Austria and therefore definitely worth a visit. From here we continue to Mistelbach and Asparn/ Zaya - locations of the MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach and MAMUZ Castle Asparn. Via the Weinviertler villages Hörersdorf and Ameis you get back to Poysdorf. Our tip: Explore the wine and grape world in Poysdorf and follow in the footsteps of wine.

  • Liechtenstein route (76 km): Along the Liechtenstein route you cycle from Poysdorf via Herrbaumgarten and Schrattenberg across the Czech border to Valtice. We recommend a visit to the Liechtenstein Castle Valtice over there. The castle has been owned by the Liechtenstein family for centuries and is considered one of the most important examples of baroque architecture in the Czech Republic. The cycle path continues to Lednice, the magnificent summer residence of the Princes of Liechtenstein with its unique palm house. From here you drive back to Austria and cross the border at Reintal. Continue to Altlichtenwarth, from there change to the cycle path and continue along the signposted Welschriesling cycle path. Via Großkrut and Walterskirchen you return to Poysdorf. (Don't forget your passport!)

To round off the evening, we recommend a Weinviertler tavern snack at one of the many wine taverns.
We will be happy to send you our wine tavern calendar with the serving times on request.
