Description

Cellar lanes are the defining feature of the Weinviertel region. Once used for producing and storing wine, they are now a cultural highlight that provide a living reminder of the region’s winegrowing traditions. So it is hardly surprising that there is a bicycle tour dedicated to them: the Weinviertler Kellergassen Radtour.

Route description Cellar lane bicycle tour

Starting in the wine town of Retz, the circular route takes in around 50km of the picturesque surrounding area and the Pulkautal valley. The first port of call after Retz is Pillersdorf, by which point it has certainly become clear why the tour is called the Weinviertel Cellar Lane Tour! Around 40 press houses make up Pillersdorf’s two-lane Öhlbergkellergasse. The cycle tour continues to Zellerndorf via Schrattenthal and Dietmannsdorf, where the next cellar lane highlight awaits – the Maulavern Kellergasse will whisk you away into a world of press houses, time-honoured winegrowing tradition and the essence of life in the Weinviertel. Almost 90 cellars line this approximately 150-year-old cellar lane. Next, it is time to head for the Pulkautal valley: passing Pernersdorf you will next cycle on to Haugsdorf. The cellar lane in Haugsdorf is set in a particularly attractive spot, and definitely worth a quick stop. Back in the saddle, it is time to head for Retzbach. The Kultplatz beim Heiligen Stein site at Mitterretzbach offers fantastic views before you make your way back to Retz.
